Alpbach - Mars Summer School
Wednesday 11th August
Having left Alpbach at 06:00am to be sure of reaching the
region of totality before the big event, we stopped enroute
for a German breakfast.
A little later, more coffee at a local cafe while we wait
and observe the clouds before deciding on the most promising
location for watching the eclipse.
At our first observing stop, a test picture with my digital
camera through the protective glasses.
Julia helps Stephan project an images of the sun through
a pair of binoculars
another attempt to photograph the sun
and another..
Then the dreaded clouds close in
and we jump back into the car to find another location..
Thorsten and Stephan jump out of the car for a quick roadside
inspection of the sky
The sun begins to be obscured by the moon..
then less desirably, by a light cloud cover..
so we rush back to the car
We follow the breaks in the cloud cover until, as totality
approaches, our advance is halted on the bank of lake
Chiemsee
which fortunately seems to hold out hope of some clear sky
so we join a crowd of eclipse watchers and
set up our equipment.
We blast a hole through the clouds with our phasers.......
(ok, I don't know what it is either - a strange atmospheric
effect that can only be detected with a digital camera perhaps..)
Then a nice view of the disappearing sun
then more clouds..
and more clouds..
But there is just time for one more relocation..
