Across Olkhon (continued)
the rocky outcrop
Looking back from my eventual position on the rocky outcrop,
with Lena visible scrambling down a rock face on the right,
and Yung Sheng back toward the main group on the left.
Lena looking back to see what Yung Sheng is shouting about..
I think it was something about the bus being about to
leave...
At Khoboi on the the most North Easterly tip of Olkhon
Our next stop was at the start of a spectacular peninsula
which jutted out to form the most north easterly point of the
island. The peninsula was surrounded by cliffs on all sides.
This picture shows the route down to the water beside the
start of the peninsula.
Lena, of course, disappeared off in the direction of the
peninsula as soon as we got off the bus. I think she
took this and the following two pictures along her way
out toward the tip..
I think this is a picture looking over the cliff face
on the way out, showing the rock platform below.
Looking east across the lake, through one of the rocky
outcrops.
I think this is looking west, in the direction of the
nearer mainland shore.
I took this shot looking back along the
peninsula toward the rest of the island, showing the
steepness of the cliffs to the East.
Not far behind, Yung Sheng and Gu Shung making their
way out to the point.
I found Lena dangling over a sheer cliff trying to
photograph this lone flower which appealed to her.
Her batteries were almost flat, so she took this one
with my camera. Unfortunately it doesn't really show
how precarious the position was..
This picture gives a much better idea of the cliff she
was dangling over...
Lena and Gu Shung waiting for me to take a picture of them
at the tip of the peninsula.
A slightly more posed shot after I told them I was ready
to take it..
The westerly edge of the peninsula was not quite so
daunting, but not still an easy climb down to the water.
Lena looks like she was contemplating it, when we
got the call indicating it was time to head back
to the bus.
Khoboi was spectacular, but a bit remote, so we had
arranged for the driver to drop us off at the nearest
village where we thought we would find a convenient
place to setup camp. Apparently this is normally a
round trip tour, and all the the other travelers on
the bus were being taken back to Olkhon.
Here we are waiting for the last stragglers to return
before squeezing back into the bus for the last leg
of our journey.
