Planetary Society Expedition to Belize
Sunday - Stone Sepulcher Cave
On Sunday Ray, arranged for a guide to take us deep into
a cave with recently discovered Mayan artefacts.
After breakfast Vicky brings out a Pooks Hill spider for
us to play with.
Then Ray leads us off into the jungle, where we meet Pete Zubrzycki
of Pacz Tours.
Pete will be our guide for our foray into the depths of Stone
Sepulcher Cave, and the recently discovered ancient Mayan artifacts
contained within.
Pete gives the group a briefing and issues our equipment, before
we all pile into (or onto, or cling to the side of) his utility
for the trip to his base camp.
At the cave Hilton, we stop for an early lunch.
And Pete gives us a brief overview of Mayan mythology and beliefs.
And then it is time to assemble our equipment
And head for the cave..
Where it is quite dark and wet...
After an hour or two of swimming, climbing, scrambling over rocks and
squeezing through crevices, we arrive at an eerie section of the
cave that is strewn with ancient artifacts and human remains.
In this part of the cave, we have to remove our boots and walk in
socks to minimize damage. This shot, taken only with the light of our
head lamps, gives an idea of what this was like.
Another human skull lies face down in the cave floor.
Another dimly illuminated artefact.
