Thursday - Arrival
I arrived in Geneva on Thursday evening, and after checking in to
the Geneva Youth Hostel and partaking of the evening meal at around
20:00, headed out to get my bearings with an initial exploration of
the city.

One of the more recognisable landmarks in Geneva - the
famous Jet d'eau on the banks of Lake Geneva.

Friday - Cathedral and Lake Geneva
On Friday morning I head out to do some sight seeing with some of
the members of the NEXUS group that I had met so far, including
four of my five room mates at the hostel.

Judith McCarron, Danyal Alex Aytekin and Philip John Stobbard.

Another picture of the group, with myself on the right. Also in the
picture this time is Mauro Werder behind Judith. I can't quite see
who it is that is behind Joanna.

Cathédrale St-Pierre
We decide to head for the Cathédrale St-Pierre in the old part
of town as our destination for the morning.
|
Entry to the Cathedral is free, but a 3 franc fee gives access
to the North and South Towers, and some spectacular views of
Genève, not to mention rather a lot of spiral stairs.

One of the walkways around the tower, with Judith sitting down, and
I think Joanna and Peter are in the shadows at the far end.

On leaving the Cathedral, our original group seemed to havw
suffered some attrition, so Peter, Joanna, Judith and myself,
retured to a nice little outdoor pizzeria for lunch. We then
had to decide between visiting the floral clock or cruising
on the Lake. We opted for the lake, and decided to spurn the
less adventurous organised cruises and rented a small motor boat.

Joanna relaxing after bravely taking the first turn at
driving, while I think Judith was a bit concerned that
I wasn't watching where I was going while taking this.

Judith taking her turn at driving, shortly before we ran out
of fuel in the middle of the lake. Fortunately we managed to
paddle and drift toward dock. Unfortunately, we found out that
we had been heading for the wrong dock. Fortunately, we were
close enough for the rental company to spot our predicament
and send out a rescue craft. And even better, gave us almost
half our money back as compensation for not giving use enough
fuel, even though it had only run out just as we were heading
back to shore..

Palais des Nations - part 1
After being rescued from Lake Geneva, Peter, Joanna and I headed
for the Palais des Nations (UN European Headquarters).
|
Next we headed for the Palais des Nations (UN European Headquarters)
On the way we met with some others from our group (misbehaving on
on some local statues) who decided to join us.
|
|
|
On arrival at the Palais des Nations, we discover that it closes
at 16:00 until July, so being two days early for the evening visit,
the best we could do was to peer through the gate, and plan to
return on Sunday for the tour. It was nearing
time to return to the Hostel for dinner, but we returned through
the adjacent botanical gardens, so the trip was not entirely wasted.
