Saturday - CERN Visit

On Saturday our entire group of 34 gather for the first time for our official tour of CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics.
On Saturday morning after breakfast, we gather in the foyer of the Youth Hostel ready to make our way to CERN.
Heading towards the main visitors entrance to the permanent exibition at CERN after leaving the bus.
After a visit to the exhibition, we head off as group toward the CERN cafeteria at 12:45.
as the cafeteria was at the opposite end of the installation, this provided a first opportunity to do some sight seeing.
After a quick meal, it was time to head back to the main entrance for our tour. Here is another view of some of the CERN buildings between the cafeteria and then entrance.
Still heading back to the entrance..
From the entrance we are transported by a CERN bus to the site of the construction of the Compact Solenoidal Detector, part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) which is due to switch on in 2005.
The Compact Solenoidal Detector under construction above ground.
Hannah Macleod, who was responsible for organising the visit, looking at a cutaway drawing of the detector being constructed.
The next section under construction being assembled prior to added to the assembly above.
Hannah and Peter look on as the guide for our sub-group providing some explanation before entering the building which provides access to the uderground construction work.
The 100m shaft into which the Compact Solenoidal Detector will eventually be lowered.
It is a bit hard to see, but this is a diagram of the uderground construction, showing the two shafts and the facilities to be constructed at the bottom.
A last look at the shaft.
