Sunday - Palais des Nations
After breakfast on Sunday it is time to check out of
our room at the Youth Hostel.
Carlos in our room shortly before vacating.
Then there is time for another attempt to visit the
UN European Headquarters before leaving Geneva.
After finally locating the visitors entrance, we
enter through the gate house. This is a plan of
building and grounds on display on the wall in the
gate house. We entered the grounds from the top
of the image, and will be entering via the new
building on the right. The external views after
the tour were taken from the courtyard near the
center.
After finally locating the visitors entrance, we
enter the grounds and prepare to enter the building.
after a short wait, we head off with the next
English language tour.
along a corridoor overlooking a picture window
in the new building, where we get an introductory
briefing on the organizational structure of the UN.
Then a visit to one of the large meeting rooms.
After the talk, while the guide isn't looking, Peter runs up to
the podium to be photographed in the presidents chair.
The view from one of the windows as we head along the corridoors
leading from the new building to the old building.
A view of the inner courtyard from the side.
and then looking out through the middle of the courtyard
toward Ariana Park which surrounds the Palais des Nations,
with Mt Blanc in the distance.
and a view of the Assembly Hall Lobby from which it was taken.
This leads to a smaller meeting room, the walls of which are
covered with very symbolic murals.
and a different seating arrangment.
and then finally to an imposing meeting room which apparently
is frequently used for hight profile meetings or when heads
of state are present.
And another shot with me in it.
Then back down the corridoors. This is was one of the
artworks donated to the UN by member states. This one
apparently designed with proportions that make it appear
that the entrance faces the observer regardless of the
angle from which it is viewed.
Finally down an escalator leading to the exit.
Then into the courtyard in front of the old building.
A view showing the Armillary Sphere in the Ariana Park -
a gift from the Wilson foundation in 1938, with
the Palais des Nations in the background
and from the same position showing how the Palais des Nations
extends to the right.
Sitting in front of the Armillary Sphere, with Mt Blanc in the
background.
And another with myself on the left.
then it is time to start heading back to meed the rest of
the group in town for lunch, and finally collect my bags
from the Youth Hostel and head back to the airport.
