26 August - Frasassi le Grotte

Monday morning was our visit to the Frasassi Caves in Genga, Ancona. The caves were discovered by the Speleological Group of Ancona's CAI, of which our mentor Sandro happended to have been a member, so we were treated to a VIP tour.

A fuzzy available light view from within the caves.
A slightly better shot - because it is a picture of a postcard..
More postcard photography.

After our visit to the caves, we returned to Bottaiccioni to continue with the drilling. The rest of the expedition came along too, to observe the core drilling with the large rig.

Stopping of enroute at the Bottaccione resturant, we were given the opportunity to sign the guest book, and found some inscriptions by some of our famous predecessors.
Including an original sketch of the fearsome TRI-ASSic.
A shot of me in the Bottaccione gorge, with scaffolding supporting some old aquaduct works in the background.
Pete climbs out of the gorge.
