Greb Hunting

Saturday July 17th

imgp1913.jpg It was after lunch again before we had ventured out of the house - good thing it never gets dark here. At 14:12 Natasha is leading us down the road behind the railway station in search of Grebami (Mushrooms).

By 15:35 we had left the road and were making our way through the forest. As you will be able to tell from Lena's head dress, Kolsky is no stranger to mosquitoes. To quote from my Lonely Planet guide: "In Summer you will need strong insect repellent in wooded countryside at almost any latitude. In northern Karelia and on the Kola Peninsula (ie where we were) huge, screaming, evil, dive-bombing mossies survive well into September." imgp1914.jpg

imgp1915.jpg Somehow Natasha seemed to survive with no additional protection other than a scarf.

by 16:00 we were lost, and instead of panicing, Lena was having an attack of the giggles... imgp1916.jpg

imgp1917.jpg Of course as soon as got lost we found more greb than we could carry.

A close up of our quarry. We soon had more greb than we could carry, which was a problem when we didn't know how much further we had to walk.. imgp1918.jpg

imgp1919.jpg At 17:50, after following a promising looking track for miles, eventually giving up and retracing our steps, we discovered a road and pleasant little lagoon with a jetty. Here Lena is looking very Russian at the end of the jetty.

Not long after, we find signs of life - an open gate through which a car and building could be seen. Here at 18:18, Lena looks on as Natasha (in the distance) tries to get directions back to our village (without actually admitting we were lost) from the owner of the car. imgp1920.jpg
