Boating

After our earlier fishing trip, where we were taken out by someone else, we decided that we really wanted a bit more independence. We wanted to explore the bay in our own boat, to be free to land where and when we wanted.

With that in mind, made an extreme effort and managed to get up early enough to make it to the bay by noon. Natasha had equipped us with a bottle of vodka and sent us out with instructions to find a drunk fisherman who would exchange it for use of his boat for the day.

However our initial search for an alcoholic fisherman failed, so we decided to call by Natasha's brother's house.

imgp1970.jpg Having explained what we were doing, it turned out that our hosts had a boat and we were offered its use. So at 12:47 we were being taken down a path that led down to the bay from their backyard toward what would soon be our boat.

At 12:57 we were on the water, and Lena had leapt onto the oars. imgp1971.jpg

imgp1973.jpg We obviously weren't going fast enough, so Lena changed into something with less wind resistance.

Our fishing guides had indicated that these seals were quite rare, and got quite excited when one was spotted in the distance during our fishing trip. However they (the seals) seemed quite fascinated by us and seemed to follow us about all day today. imgp1975.jpg

though our friend still doesn't seem to be struggling too much to keep up with us.. imgp1976.jpg

imgp1978.jpg ramming speed...

Around 14:13 I eventually managed to wrestle the oars out of Lena's hands so that I could have a try at rowing... imgp1979.jpg

imgp1980.jpg I then had a chance to demonstrate my precision rowing skills after Lena managed to throw our bailing bucket overboard, and we had to chase it around the bay for a while.

If this location looks familiar, it is because we managed to locate our beach camp site from our hike on Tuesday, and set up camp there again. By 16:38 we were just finishing our meal. imgp1982.jpg

imgp1983.jpg Then at 17:19, time to do the washing up.

Then at 18:17 it was time to cast off and start making our way back to our starting point. imgp1984.jpg

imgp1987.jpg At 19:54 - we seemed to be making such good time that we even decided that we could afford to drop anchor and take it easy for a while. I took the opportunity to try balancing the camera at the bow of the boat for a timer shot.

We had fishing gear with us, so I suppose we could have done some fishing. But remembering how much work there was preparing the mountain of fish we returned with last time, I was ready to fight them off if they tried climbing into the boat by themselves.

At 20:16, I was sitting on the bow of the boat, with Lena back on the oars behind me. imgp1988.jpg

imgp1990.jpg It turned out that we didn't really have as much time to spare as we had thought, and nearly missed the last bus home. We had to almost run back to the bus stop, barely stopping long enough to say hello when we made our pre-arranged call at Larissa's to collect milk on the way.

We had missed the bus every other day, but on those occasions we had missed it by hours, which was not so bad. We didn't want to just miss it.

We made it in time, and at 22:24 we walking down the path to Natasha's house.
