Saturday January 8th - Our last day in Zelenaborsky

This was our last day in Zelenaborsky - our train back to Moscow leaving late tonight. Our plan was to spend the day exploring the area we had found the previous evening, but this time before it gets too dark. In addition, we had to return the borrowed skis and boots which Natasha had obtained for us, which fortunately we could leave at her school which was en-route.

We made a supreme effort to get away early (if I remember correctly, a certain person whose name starts with an 'L' was protesting that it was "still dark" and too early to get up at 9:30...)

imgp2567.jpg It was still after noon by the time we emerged, and at 12:53 Sasha and I were waiting for Lena to emerge from the local shop so that we could catch the bus.

At 13:37 we were off the bus and on our way down the path leading to the dam, and admiring the scenery in daylight. imgp2568.jpg

imgp2569.jpg Looking back along the snowy path we were following.

Then I scampered across onto the snowy bank that I had just photographed so that Lena could take my picture with the scenic background. imgp2571.jpg

imgp2573.jpg Then Lena wanted a turn, although this one seems to have turned out a little blurred.

Then we continued on down the track toward a railway bridge, with the dam construction that Sasha and I had climbed the previous night visible in the background.

I managed to catch a train just passing over the bridge, so it was clearly heavily used.

imgp2575.jpg We clambered up the bank onto the bridge and used it to cross to the other bank.

A better view of the dam construction as seen from the railway bridge. imgp2576.jpg

imgp2577.jpg Sasha leads the way down a rather steep and snowy set of steps down from the other side of the bridge.

Followed by Lena, who managed to retain her footing, thus failing to provide anything more interesting to photograph... imgp2578.jpg

imgp2579.jpg At 13:54 we were back at the dam construction Sasha and I had climbed in the dark the previous day.

Five minutes later we were all on top of the structure admiring the view. imgp2581.jpg

imgp2582.jpg At 14:03, the view looking back at the railway bridge we had just crossed, again caught with a train starting to cross.

Lena wanted a portrait taken on the platform.. imgp2583.jpg

imgp2587.jpg At this point, after five attempts with which Lena wasn't happy with her expression, she agreed it was just getting steadily sillier the harder she tried...

So she settled for this changed pose.. imgp2588.jpg

imgp2591.jpg Here I am on the structure at 14:10. I wanted a bit more of the metalwork in the picture to give a better indication of what we were standing on.

At 14:20 we are still scrambling over the snowy steel structure. imgp2593.jpg

imgp2595.jpg I think Lena is just showing off for the camera here..

At 14:30 we were continuing along our track. We decided to try to find a way back to Natasha's without having to retrace our steps by following the shoreline back in what appeared to be the right general direction. imgp2596.jpg

imgp2597.jpg The track led us through a more remote part of the village, and we were not sure that we wouldn't eventually reach a dead end that would force us back the way we had come.

But the scenery was interesting so it seemed worth the risk.. imgp2598.jpg

imgp2601.jpg At this point we had found a road with a car on it, so we were pretty sure that we were going to be able to get home this way.

At 15:02, looking back towards the lake as we are about to find ourselves back on the main road we had been looking for. imgp2602.jpg

imgp2603.jpg At 15:26 we were well on our way home, and decided to have a break and take advantage of the thermos of tea that we had carried with us.

We were soon back at Natasha's, and stopped at a local store to buy some provisions for the trip back to Moscow. Then we had the evening to pack and prepare ourselves for our train departure in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
