Field Trip Day 2 - Aci Castello

Our last stop is the Aci Castello promontory, which contains a thick sequence of pillow basalts deposited in shallow water and a horizontal fossil surface representing a terrace cut into the pillow lava.
Inge, being an Aeronautical Engineer, got excited about this helicopter that flew by while we were approaching the prominentory. Not wanting to be left out, I thought I had better photograph it too.

A view of the promontory from the other side.
Then back up to street level..
Where Gian suggests that it would be a good time for the 'official' Field Trip photo.
And then a quick briefing on the evenings activities before heading for the workshop venue to check into our hotels and prepare for the welcome cocktail party.

The Welcome Cocktail

After checking in to our respective hotels, we all meet at the Grand Hotel Baia Verde for the Welcome Cocktail.

Stefania and Pio taking care of the registration formalities.
Our guest speaker, Dr Gentry Lee of JPL (the one with the mysterious halo on the right) is introduced..

After the welcome cocktail, Inge and I Joined Ljuba for dinner at a resturant near her hotel.
