Workshop - Day 1

The Workshop was scheduled to start at 8:45 at the Grand Hotel Baia Verde. As Inge and I were staying at the Jolly Hotel a short distance away, we worked out that we would have to have met for breakfast by 7:30 in order to catch the shuttle bus that had been organised for around 8:00. We worked out that if we skipped the morning shuttle bus and walked to the workshop instead, we could sleep in a bit later and still arrive in time. Unfortunately, due to a slight miscalculation of distance, we were only half right.

This picture was taken at 8:45, as the Welcoming Speech would have been starting at the workshop venue visible on the right.
Arriving just in time to catch the first talk at 9:00, after missing the welcoming speech.. The air conditioning was not working at this point, which Ljuba was happy about, but I would have appreciated it after the hurried walk in.
Jens giving his talk entitled "Terrestrial hematite deposits formed in interaction with hydrocarbons and biological activity: an analogue to Martian hematite deposits".
Gian moderates as Jens fields some questions.
Answering more questions..
The first of our lunchtime banquets at the Baia Verde.
Then back for more presentations..
M. Coradini giving his talk on "Mars Express and beyond in ESA".
Pio working the projection system during one of the last talks.

Monday night - Dinner in Catania

On Monday night (20:11 to be exact, according to my bus ticket) Ljuba and I went into Catania with Goro, Gilleume and Jens, which is where they and several other attendees had decided to stay.
Jens said that their accomodation in Catania had been described to him as a ruin. I didn't get a picture of it, so this will have to do. Fortunately for them, this was not it...
It took some time, but eventually we managed to get enough people organised to venture down town and get something to eat. We ended up at quite a nice little pizza resturant nestled up in a back street roof top.
It was after midnight by the time we finished dinner, but Mihaela and Ljuba weren't ready to retire yet. I think this was at an outdoor Irish bar that we found down town.
Ljuba had been yawning all day after having had to get up in time to catch the 8:00am shuttle from her hotel (which was much further from the workshop venue than mine, so walking wasn't an option) She seems to have recovered by now though..
