Monday - Jurassic Sediments at Staiths

On Monday our field trip takes us to Staiths on the East Coast - a town famous as James Cook's launching point..
Group 5 (my group) gathering for Peters introduction to the area.
Peter points out one of the many fossils found in the beds. This was probably a mega-somthing-or-other, which seemed pretty common, although that doesn't seem to have stopped me forgetting its name.
We took a bit of convincing about some of the more marginal trace fossils Peter found.
Completing our graphic log, which is a representation of the sequence of beds, with information about lithology, bed contacts, sedimentary structures and fossils (trace and body) identified. Staiths is visible in the background.

Tuesday - Cumbria Day: Shap, Tebay and Appleby

Heading up to a quarry - you can tell it is an active quarry by our fluorescent yellow jackets. I think this was Hoff Quarry in the Vale of Eden, which provides an excellent exposure of the Penrith Sandstone Series.
Heading back from Hoff Quarry.
